Edward Hopper’s work is the most recognizable art in America. Iconic, universally praised, parodied, synonymous with themes of solitude, regret and isolation. His work has inspired countless artists and filmmakers, from Alfred Hitchcock to the creators of The Simpsons. But little is known about Hopper. This riveting hour reveals the man behind the brush and how his marriage to fellow artist Jo Nivision shaped Hopper’s art and career. The film, in the making for six years by M&C Media, breaks new ground as the first comprehensive biographical documentary on Hopper. As part of the prestigious American Masters series on PBS, it features dozens of Hopper’s evocative images, revealing research, letters, diary entries, illuminating interviews, and rare archival footage.
